Single Night Workshop:   Supportive Parenting Through Your Child’s College Application Process.

Single Night Workshop:  Supportive Parenting Through Your Child’s College Application Process.

Supporting your child through the college selection, application, and enrollment process can yield some of the most challenging, confusing, overwhelming, and expensive moments in your parenting yet.   From college chatter in the early years (Go Badgers!) to college visits (Spring Break Sophomore Year?), to whittling the list (only "Good" schools??), to writing essays (don't write theirs) and completing all of the application elements on time (a Maze of Forms and Deadlines)... to waiting... to watching as they receive admission decisions, and coping with the roller coaster of it all, what is the role of you, their most important grown-ups?  Just as you have high hopes for your child, you may also have misgivings about the pressure they are under to the detriment of their sleep, free time, and your family’s equilibrium.  How do you sort your ambitions from theirs?  How do you assess cost and when do you level with them about it?  How do you preserve your relationship and protect their mental health and well-being amidst a very competitive, intense culture? What words and deeds from you are helpful, and what are absolutely not?  This workshop will be an opportunity for parents to consider how best to support their college-applicant as you together navigate the "College Application Industrial Complex" and include themes from  Never Enough; When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic - and What We Can Do About It (Jennifer Breheny Wallace).

April 18, 2024, 7:00-8:30 pm Edina Senior Center (5280 Grandview Square Edina, MN 55436)

Tailored to parents/caregivers of High School Students, but open to any parent or caregiver who reads the description and says YES.

Book Study: Never Enough; When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic - and What We Can Do About It

Our kids have everything going for them…right?

“American teens from upper-middle class families are more likely to have higher rates of depression, anxiety and substance abuse than any other socioeconomic group of young people,” according to psychologist Suniya Luthar, PhD.

Join this book study of Never Enough; When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic - and What We Can Do About It (Jennifer Breheny Wallace). Her work describes the relationship between highly college-educated, affluent communities, the cut-throat competitive school climates they tend to spawn, and the grinding toll it all is taking on our kids’ mental health & well-being, including corroding powerfully protective parent/child relationships. “Packed with memorable stories and offering a powerful toolkit for positive change, Never Enough offers an urgent, humane view of the crisis plaguing today’s teens and a practical framework for how to help.”

Emptier Nest, Full Heart

Single Night Workshop in collaboration with Liz Otteson. You’ve done it! You’ve launched a child into something resembling independence (whatever that might look like). We offer our congratulations! We embrace you and all your feels as you and your family adjust in the wake of a child flying the coop and leaving the rest of you swallowing hard, looking at each other, and sorting a new reality.  And we invite you to join us for a special evening that will give you space and community as you navigate this family transition.  It will be a friendly, facilitated conversation to reflect on your current stage and your next phase of parenting. Why? Because we all can benefit from the opportunity to pause, feel, think, and plan — to bring intention to our parenting, partnering, and being our full selves. All you need to do is register for this event, bring yourself, and be part of the conversation.

In person, Tuesday October 26, 2023 from 7:00-8:30pm $40.   Register here. Maximum 15 people.

What people are saying:

Sarah has truly been a lifeline for me for the last couple of years. I first took her Untangled book study class, and from there I’ve taken anything she offers to make sure I can get my regular dose of Sarah Hardy wisdom! The perspective that she provides in such a kind and supportive way has helped me weather the storm of adolescence in countless ways.
The topics, conversations, and realizations that came from participation in Sarah’s class were grounding and reassuring. They helped me ride the waves of development with confidence and acceptance of the ever-changing nature of parenting and people. Since then I have signed up for every class Sarah has offered. She is a gifted communicator, moderator, and teacher.
I have taken three classes with Sarah and each time have come away with an improved ability to parent in a calm and effective manner. She has a knack for breaking down big parenting and child development topics into concrete tips that I can easily use with my own children.
