Book Study: Never Enough; When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic - and What We Can Do About It

Our kids have everything going for them…right?

“American teens from upper-middle class families are more likely to have higher rates of depression, anxiety and substance abuse than any other socioeconomic group of young people,” according to psychologist Suniya Luthar, PhD.

Join this book study of Never Enough; When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic - and What We Can Do About It (Jennifer Breheny Wallace). Her work describes the relationship between highly college-educated, affluent communities, the cut-throat competitive school climates they tend to spawn, and the grinding toll it all is taking on our kids’ mental health & well-being, including corroding powerfully protective parent/child relationships.   “Packed with memorable stories and offering a powerful toolkit for positive change, Never Enough offers an urgent, humane view of the crisis plaguing today’s teens and a practical framework for how to help.”

This class might be perfect for you if you have high hopes, ambitions, and expectations for your child but ALSO misgivings about the pressure they are under (accelerated math? 5 APs? Varsity Captain AND Community Service Letter?)  to the detriment of their sleep, free time, and your family’s equilibrium.  Are there moments when you find yourself swept up in the achievement and accolade frenzy, feeling resentful of other kids’ accomplishments and worried that your child’s path to “success'' is threatened by their peers, only to come to your senses and wonder WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE?

In this class, parents and caregivers will join an intimate, supportive community, explore the content of this book one chapter per week, and reflect together on the path it offers for parenting whole humans within a very competitive ecosystem.  We’ll talk about the psychology behind competition, scarcity, social comparison, what we know our children actually need in order to flourish, and how we can work to provide them just that.   (And if you don’t read, 100% no worries I always summarize the content so everyone’s on the same page). Find your copy and join us!
